The original Benedictine church was founded at the end of the X century by Willa, mother of the Marchese Ugo di Toscana. Arnolfo di Cambio redesigned it around 1285; the orientation differs from what we see today (elements of the old apse, however, are still visible on Via del Proconsolo). In the XVII century the church was significantly remodeled and even the entrance was moved to Via Dante Alighieri. The graceful, soaring fourteenth century bell tower is embellished with a series of double-lighted Gothic windows. The interior is a Greek cross and hosts several Renaissance masterpieces such as the Funeral Monument to the Marchese Ugo di Toscana by Mino da Fiesole and the Vision of St. Bernard, an outstanding painting by Filippino Lippi. The adjacent, fifteenth century Chiostro degli Aranci, has twelve lunettes frescoed with scenes from the life of St. Bernard.
