San Salvi Last Supper
San Salvi Last Supper
art site
Via di San Salvi, Firenze, Italia
Show on map
This museum, which is located just a short distance from the Vallombrosian church of the same name was built by exploiting one side of the portico, kitchen, washroom and refectory of the old complex. Its highlight is the Last Supper by Andrea del Sarto who began working on the painting in 1511. The fresco is extremely well calibrated in the sequence of the figures’ gestures and psychological reactions, according to the lessons of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper in Milan. The concept of the upper part of the fresco, with figures in period dress looking down from a balcony, however is new and striking. The museum houses a series of other works by the artist along with a significant number of sixteenth century paintings that can be more or less directly related to Andrea del Sarto’s artistic circle.
