This church was already documented in the 11th century as dedicated to the Archangel Saint Michael venerated by the Longobards. Later it became the church of San Michele Bertelde and later was taken over by the Olivetans (1553) and then the Theatines (1592) an order created by the Counterreformation.. Thanks to contributions from the members of the Medici court (the grand duke Ferdinando I and his son, Cardinal Carlo de’ Medici were exceptionally generous) the Theatines enlarged the church to designs by Matteo Nigetti and Gherardo Silvani (who created the façade) who added the convent dedicated to Saint Cajetan (Gaetano) The church is one of the finest examples of the Florentine Baroque that was inspired by a theatrically triumphant and typically Roman style. The interior is a Latin cross with a single nave on either side of which there are three chapels with one of the most important seventeenth century Florentine sculpture groups, the cycle of the Apostles and the Evangelists.. The church is home to works by many artists such as Matteo Rosselli, Jacopo Vignali, Giovanni Bilivert, Jacopo Sani and Francesco Susini.
