The brother who carried the Cross during processions walked barefoot, hence the unusual name (scalzo means barefoot). The small entrance on Via Cavour is crowned by a Della Robbia lunette portraying St. John the Baptist and opens onto a small jewel. The cloister is completely decorated with monochrome frescoes by Andrea del Sarto (who did most of the work) and Franciabigio. This very unusual fresco cycle, painted between 1507 and 1526, depicts Scenes from the Life of St. John the Baptist.
