In the right nave of the cathedral there is a staircase that leads down to Santa Reparata and back into time. The restorations begun after the 1966 flood revealed a series of interesting stratifications that shed light on the early history of Santa Maria del Fiore. Arnolfo’s new cathedral was built over the ruins of the old church of Santa Reparata which dated from the IV-V century. Because of the many changes that were made in different periods up to the XIV century, the old complex is not easy to interpret: the structure is that of a basilica with a transept, apsidal chapels and a raised choir. The noteworthy fragments of the floor mosaics probably date from the V century. The fresco of Cristo in Pietà is from the XIV century as are most of the grave markers. In the display cases we can admire items from republican and imperial Rome, while the items from the tomb of Giovanni de’ Medici date from the fourteenth century. The tomb of Filippo Brunelleschi was a surprising discovery in 1972. It is located near the bust of the great architect that had been carved by his adopted son and pupil, Buggiano.
