This cemetery was established by the Swiss community in Florence around 1830. Originally it was outside the fourteenth century walls that were demolished to make room for the avenues that now circle the city. The “Protestant Cemetery” soon became known as the English Cemetery because of the many English men and women who are buried there. The most famous of the over one thousand tombs are those of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and the poet Walter Landor and G.P. Vieusseux, noted man of letters. The atmosphere surrounding the cemetery is totally surreal and dissonant. It is like an enchanted island, protected by tall cypress trees while city traffic buzzes and hums all around. It was the inspiration for A. Boecklin’s masterpiece painting, Isle of the Dead.
