Built at the end of the sixteenth century to plans by Bernardo Buontalenti, the Fortezza di San Giorgio with its typical tenaille layout stands atop a hill (hence the appellative “Belvedere”) south of the Boboli Gardens as part of the defenses of the fourteenth century city walls that are still visible at this point. From the entrance we ascend a staircase with a barrel-vaulted ceiling to reach the ramparts that offer an extraordinary view of the city and its surroundings. The Palazzina di Belvedere (which is only opened for special exhibitions), with its elegantly stuccoed walls with pietra forte corners was designed by Ammannati and is one of the striking features of the city’s landscape.
