The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Firenze was opened in 1881 in the seventeenth century Palazzo della Crocetta, bringing together masterpieces from the Medici collections: Greek, Etruscan and Roman art as well as pieces from the Egyptian Museum. This, the Egyptian collection comprised mainly objects acquired during the Franco-Tuscan expedition to Egypt (1827-1828). The section of the museum known as the Museo Topografico was inaugurated in 1897. Severely damaged by the flood in 1966 it illustrated the history of the Etruscans through a series of important artifacts discovered in what was once Etruria. The garden, where various types of Etruscan tombs were reconstructed with original materials, was opened to the public in 1902. The universally acclaimed masterpieces in this museum include the François Vase, the sarcophagus of Larthia Seianti, the Mater Matuta, the Milani Apollo and Apollo, the Pesaro Idol, the Arringatore (Orator) and the Chimera of Arezzo.
