This is the most important museum of its kind in Italy with over four million specimens. It was established in 1842 and was transferred to its current location at the end of the XIX century. In addition to the many herbaria (the oldest, by A. Cesalpino dates from the XVI century) the museum conserves many different botanical materials (fossils, fruits, seeds, pollens, wood samples) from all continents. There is also a remarkable artistic section that features some splendid eighteenth-nineteenth century wax models and antique drawings
