This, the oldest museum of its kind in Italy (1869), was founded by the father of Italian anthropology, Paolo Mantegazza. It is housed in the sixteenth century Palazzo Non Finito. It offers an extraordinary overview of the natural history of the human race and the development of civilization. The customs and traditions of humans are brought to life through an extraordinary array of objects: from weapons to textiles, from tools to clothing, from votive figures to musical instruments from funeral masks to shrunken heads decorated with feathers. The oldest of these items, that are arranged according to geographic criteria – from Africa to Asia, from America to Oceania – were part of the Medici collections and some were formerly in the Guardaroba Mediceo.
