The Dominican monastery of Santa Maria Novella that dates from the middle of the XIII century is one of the city’s oldest and most important monuments. Over the centuries it has hosted pontiffs and it was the seat of the Council of 1439 for the reunification of the Eastern and Roman churches. The magnificent ornamentation is a sort of testimony of the significant part the monastery played in the religious and cultural history of Florence. The Green Cloister, that gets its name from the almost-monochrome technique of the wall paintings, is decorated with an interesting cycle of Scenes from the Old Testament. The outstanding elements are the lunettes with scenes of The Creation and the Flood by Paolo Uccello. The famous fourteenth century frescoes by Andrea di Bonaiuto in the Spanish Chapel celebrate the Dominican Order through complex allegorical scenes. The Cappella degli Ubriachi and the Refectory offer a rich selection of jeweled ceremonial items and liturgical vestments.
