The “Giardini dei Semplici” originally established to cultivate medicinal herbs is the third oldest botanical garden in the world. It was founded in 1545 by Cosimo I de’ Medici who, two years before had established the first “official” university botanical gardens in Pisa. In 1718 it was entrusted to the Società Botanica Fiorentina, directed by Pier Antonio Micheli who expanded the collection of plants well beyond the range of only medicinal species to make it famous throughout world. Micheli also gave the gardens a modern imprint by separating botany from medical science. In 1783 the gardens came under the supervision of the Accademia dei Georgofili which rationalized the organization and added farm and fruit-bearing plants. The large greenhouses that are still used today were built in 1880 and in 1905 the Istituto Botanico was combined with the Giardino dei Semplici. During the last century the garden, along with Florence, enjoyed moments of splendor and suffered times of tragedy such as the war. Over the years it has constantly augmented its scientific imprint and affirmed its importance on the Florentine and Italian cultural scenarios
