Built by the Davizzi family in the mid-fourteenth century, the palazzo was purchased by the Davanzati around two centuries later. Early in the twentieth century, thanks to the renowned antiques dealer, Elia Volpi, it was restored and furnished to recreate a typical, Florentine residence. It was acquired by the Italian government in 1951, and after a series of intelligent acquisitions – that are still being made – the palazzo was transformed into the “Museo della Casa Fiorentina Antica,” the museum of the old Florentine home. Midway between a Medieval tower-house and a Renaissance palazzo, the building is three stories high and is crowned by a loggia. Old paintings, tapestries, wedding chests, sculptures, furniture, household items, lace, and tools for “women’s work” have an ideal home in the many rooms (great hall, dining room, bedroom, kitchen and courtyard) some of which are decorated with interesting fourteenth century frescoes. A visit to Palazzo Davanzati leaves one with the unforgettable sensation of having taken a fleeting trip through time.
