Built in the late XIII century to host the Signoria, the city’s supreme governing body, the palazzo has been remodeled and enlarged over the centuries. One of the main transformations was undertaken after 1540 when Cosimo I de’ Medici decided to use it as his residence. It was the transformation to ducal palace to which we owe the presence of most of the fine paintings and sculptures. These include the fine frescoes by Agnolo Bronzino in the Chapel of Eleonora, the lavish historical and allegorical painting cycles alluding to the grandeur of the Medici by Giorgio Vasari and his helpers in the rooms that are open to the public, the amazing maps on the doors of the cabinets which surround the oldest, large globe, the Putto With Dolphin by Andrea del Verrocchio and Michelangelo’s masterful Victory. The city’s republican period is recalled by the fifteenth century decorations in the Audience Room and the Sala dei Gigli where we can also admire Donatello’s famous bronze Judith. Other important artworks, including a famous painting by Bronzino, are in the rooms that house the Loeser Bequest. Palazzo Vecchio is still the seat of the city government
