Sant'Apollonia Last Supper
Sant'Apollonia Last Supper
art site
Via 27 Aprile, 50129 Firenze, Italia
Show on map
Entering the hall of the former refectory of the Benedictine Sisters of Saint Apollonia that was built in 1339 and enlarged in the fifteenth century, the visitor’s gaze is immediately drawn to the right wall that was entirely frescoed by Andrea del Castagno around 1447. According to a traditional iconography the lower part of the walls portrays the Last Supper (with Judas in isolation on the near side of the table), which is surmounted by the Crucifixion, in the middle and the Deposition and Resurrection on either side. This is the first Renaissance rendering of the Last Super in Florence. The artist placed the intensely shaded figures in a space constructed with all the rigor of the rules of perspective. The Museum also houses two fine lunettes frescoed by the same artist along with a series of sinopias.
