In 1489 the rich merchant, Filippo Strozzi commissioned Benedetto da Maiano to design this splendid palazzo which was completed by Cronaca. The typical ashlar façade is smoother on the upper floors, and the building bears some resemblance to Michelozzo’s earlier Palazzo Medici-Riccardi. The courtyard with its pietra serena columns and capitals was designed by Cronaca as was the beautiful projecting cornice. From this harmonious, elegant courtyard we can access the institutes that are headquartered in the palazzo: the Gabinetto Vieusseux (a famous cultural institute with an important library) and the Istituto di Studi sul Rinascimento. The Palazzo Strozzi is currently used as the venue for major art exhibits.
