Elizabeth Barrett Browning, one of England’s greatest female poets, and her husband Robert Browning lived in this old house. They were both fascinated by Florence and arrived here in 1847 not too long after their secret wedding in 1846. Elizabeth died in 1861 and was buried in the English Cemetery, thus linking her name to the city forever. The furnishings and atmosphere in Casa Guidi have remained practically unchanged since them.
