As outstanding collection of 13th - 18th-century Italian and European paintings, set up in 1581 by Francesco de' Medici in the palace designed by Vasari. Besides Renaissance masterpieces by Botticelli (Spring, the Birth of Venus), Michelangelo (Tondo Doni), Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, also on display-chronologically and by schools - are works by Giotto, Masaccio, Piero della Francesca, Giovanni Bellini, Mantegna, Pontormo, Tiziano, and Caravaggio. The Tribune of Buontalenti (1584), the original core of the Medici collections, houses the most famous ancient sculptures. European paintings include works by Dürer,Rubens and REmbrandt. The Vasari Corridor, connecting the Uzzizi with the Palazzo Pitti, contains a rich array of self-portraits, while the prestigious collection of drawings and prints is displayed on rotatopn in the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe.
