Visit to Museums and Foundations: Restoration laboratory of tapestries and rugs - Opificio delle Pietre Dure
Installed on the guard walk of Palazzo Vecchio, inside the Sala delle Bandiere and inaugurated in 1986, the laboratory, like the Opificio from which it depends, is a center for excellence in restoration. In this case, the experts’ “patients” are tapestries and rugs; it was here that the magnificent tapestries that grace the Salone de’ Dugento were restored. Visit duration from 10 to 11 a.m.

This museum was established at the end of the nineteenth century in the warehouses of the semiprecious stone workshops founded by the Medici in 1588. A chronologically arrange exhibit that takes us through three centuries features examples of “Florentine mosaic.” This is a sophisticated technique that composes complex images, pictures, tabletops, panels, chests and furnishings, carvings and elegant useful items from pieces of semiprecious stones. The museum also displays work benches and tools and a selection of over 600 pieces of different types of semiprecious stones and marble. The museum was refurbished in 1995.
