On the upper floors of Villa Bardini, the museum explores the career and production of the great Roman designer, from the early 1950s onward. Exhibits include a series of “sculpture-dresses” (the permanent nucleus of the collection) and other high fashion creations shown on a rotation basis. Completing the museum offer are sketches, working drawings, and audiovisuals. The Fondazione Roberto Capucci was brought to its new home on the upper floors of the seventeenth century Villa Bardini, by the Fondazione Parchi Monumentali Bardini e Peyron, and is sponsored by the Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze. The foundation, boasts an incredible quantity of documentary materials on the career of the great Roman designer who has maintained close ties with Florence ever since his 1951 debut at the first Italian high fashion show at the home of Marchese Giorgini.
Established in 2005 with the Associazione Civita, the Fondazione Roberto Capucci is also sponsored by the Centro di Firenze per la Moda Italiana, the Fondazione Edoardo Garrone and the Museo del Tessuto of Prato, as well as the Fundacòn Santander Central Hispano and the Consorzio BAICR Sistema Cultura.
The Museum owns 400 high fashion creations, 300 illustrations, 22,000 sketches, 22 notebooks, 150 audiovisuals as well as 40,000 photographs and similar number of articles that all testify to the Roman maestro's long and intense career. His works on shape and colors have often led to comparisons with sculpture and painting.
This considerable corpus will be displayed according to themes that will highlight the various conceptual aspects of his work and will also include details on the actual dressmaking work.
In addition to offering the public a full overview of this extraordinary career, the foundation's aim is to relaunch the Italian tradition of fine craftsmanship and sophisticated research in style, combined with a recovery of outstanding quality of Italian fashions.
The rich archives will be available to scholars and experts in the fields of style and costume and will be an important starting point for future research and education; in addition the foundation will offer special workshops.
